Chapter 14

Six weeks should be long enough to house train a dog, right?

Theo was busy making plans, and the first item on his to-do list was to train the pup to go to the toilet in the garden. With this aim in mind, as soon as he returned from collecting Poppy from Josie’s he rushed her straight out into the garden and waited somewhat impatiently for her to do what he wanted her to do.

Typically, she refused, no matter how often he told her to ‘do a wee’ (hoping none of his neighbours heard him) and typically, the second he looked away she squatted, as the little puddle on the patio testified.

He still gave her plenty of praise, even though he hadn’t caught her in the act because he’d been too busy checking out the garden to keep an eye on her. The old cottage’s garden had six-foot-high brick walls surrounding it, and a suitably high wooden gate on the side. There was no way the dog was getting through, under or over it, and he toyed with the idea of putting some kind of a cat (dog) flap in the back door, so she could come and go as she pleased. If it worked for cats, surely it must work for dogs? But with no idea how large she’d grow, he wasn’t sure how feasible it would be, especially considering his back door was mostly all glass. It was great for letting the light in and for allowing Poppy to be able to see into the garden, but as for putting a doggy door in, he wasn’t sure it would work. Anyway, it was a thought for another time, when she was older and fully grown.

Next on his list for today was breakfast – for him, not the dog as she’d already had hers – then he intended to make an appointment with a vet to get her checked over, and after that he’d find out if there were any puppy training classes nearby. He wanted her to come when she was called, and to sit and stay before he went back to work. Six weeks should be long enough for that too, shouldn’t it?

After that, he intended to Poppy-proof the house. He’d already made a half-hearted attempt at placing anything dangerous and/or precious out of the reach of sharp little teeth, but he didn’t want to be spending the next few months as she went through the teething stage having to watch her continually to ensure she didn’t get up to any mischief.

As he glanced around with dog-conscious eyes, he decided that the camera in the kitchen could stay for the time being, so he could check what she was getting up to when he was out – and he intended to be out every single day. Not for long, only five minutes to start with, but he wanted to get her used to him not being there all the time, because the risk was that he’d spend
